Dear Santa

Posted by Mrs. Mendonca

Today at school we wrote letters to Santa Claus.  We practiced writing some new sight words in our letter : mom, dad, me, love.  We also practiced using scissors as we cut out pictures of some gifts we are wishing for for Christmas.  We will be mailing our letters to Santa.  Take a look at some letters from a few friends in our class :

We also enjoyed some of the other Christmas centers today :

Here is one of our friends  reading a Christmas book at the reading center.
At the dramatic play center we are retelling the story of Christmas using this wooden nativity set Mrs. Mendonca brought from home.

In the sensory bin, the friends are counting the various Christmas items.  Can you count how many gold Christmas balls are in the bin? Can you see any Christmas bows?

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...

Posted by : Mrs. Mendonca

Christmas is fast approaching and we are getting very excited.  The children are enjoying learning Christmas songs, reading Christmas stories and playing at our Christmas centers.  This week we read a great book called, "The Bird in Santa's Beard".  It was a great book about Santa helping out a little bird who didn't fly south with all of his other bird friends.  He needed a warm place to stay, so he got comfy in Santa's beard.  It was a great book !

We also enjoyed writing Christmas words at the writing center. We got to write on special Christmas paper and we practiced our best writing.  Here are a few friends at the writing center :

They did some amazing work.  Here are some examples from Alicia and Alrizha :

Rewind...

Posted by : Mrs. Mendonca

We forgot to tell you all about our two great field trips we took in the past two weeks.  On Thursday, October 30th we visited Millers Farm.  We enjoyed hearing some great pumpkin and Halloween stories read by Mrs Miller.  She gave us a delicious, red apple to eat as a snack while we listened to the stories.  Next, we went on a tractor ride out to the pumpkin patch.  It was a muddy, bumpy ride! We saw so many pumpkins in all different shapes, sizes and colours.  When we got into the middle of the patch, we got off the wagon and went out to pick our very own pumpkin.  Then we headed back to the farm and got to play in the stacks of hey.  It was a great trip and we had so much fun.. Here are a few pictures from our trip :

This past week we also visited the Greenboro Library.  We had a great day to walk down to the library.  We learned all about the different things you can borrow from the library like books, videos, movies, music cds and even video games.  We also learned all about how to take care of the things that we borrow from the library.  If we want to borrow books from the library we need a library card.  Visit the Greenboro Library and they would be happy to make you a library card.  Thanks to all the parents who volunteered to help us on both the trips.

Pumpkin Discovery

Posted by : Mrs Mendonca

This past week we discovered a lot about pumpkins.  As we are getting closer to our visit to Miller's Farm, we thought it would be fun to learn more about pumpkins.  In Language, we used descriptive language to describe the outside of the pumpkin.  We used our senses to describe how the pumpkin felt, smelled, looked and sounded...but we didn't taste it !  We also read a great book about the life cycle of a pumpkin and practiced putting the steps in order on the smartboard during center time. Check out the song about the life cycle of the pumpkin in the video section of our blog.  In Math, we practiced counting using pumpkin seeds.  Some friends in the class can already count past 50 !!  Way to go !!  We practiced our cutting skills using orange play dough.  We rolled it into snakes and balls and used scissors to cut through it.  We also started making tissue paper pumpkins to decorate our classroom door for Halloween next week.  Don't forget about the Halloween Dance-a-thon coming up this Friday.  We are going to wear our costumes and dance in the gym all to raise money to buy some great stuff for our school.  Have fun getting pledges from friends and family this week!

A whole lot of apples !

Written By Mrs. Mendonca

This week was a short week after the Thanksgiving long weekend, but it was busy. In Language we are continuing to practice writing and recognizing our names.  We also added our first two sight words to the word wall, "a" and "I". We can recognize these two words in the morning message! In the dramatic play center, we have created a Halloween shop. We have costumes, and decorations up and all the friends are enjoying taking turns at this center. We also read many great stories this week including Curious George Flies a Kite, which got all of us curious to build our own kites.  We uses supplies such as string, paper, popsicle sticks, glue, scissors and tape to create our very own kites at the Art Center.  We also learned a lot about apples this week.  We continued to enjoy singing our apple song (the video is posted in the video tab), and we even had an apple taste testing center.  All our friends had the chance to taste apples and graph which one was their favourite.  Take a look at the picture to see the results of our graph.
