Pumpkin Discovery

Posted by : Mrs Mendonca

This past week we discovered a lot about pumpkins.  As we are getting closer to our visit to Miller's Farm, we thought it would be fun to learn more about pumpkins.  In Language, we used descriptive language to describe the outside of the pumpkin.  We used our senses to describe how the pumpkin felt, smelled, looked and sounded...but we didn't taste it !  We also read a great book about the life cycle of a pumpkin and practiced putting the steps in order on the smartboard during center time. Check out the song about the life cycle of the pumpkin in the video section of our blog.  In Math, we practiced counting using pumpkin seeds.  Some friends in the class can already count past 50 !!  Way to go !!  We practiced our cutting skills using orange play dough.  We rolled it into snakes and balls and used scissors to cut through it.  We also started making tissue paper pumpkins to decorate our classroom door for Halloween next week.  Don't forget about the Halloween Dance-a-thon coming up this Friday.  We are going to wear our costumes and dance in the gym all to raise money to buy some great stuff for our school.  Have fun getting pledges from friends and family this week!

A whole lot of apples !

Written By Mrs. Mendonca

This week was a short week after the Thanksgiving long weekend, but it was busy. In Language we are continuing to practice writing and recognizing our names.  We also added our first two sight words to the word wall, "a" and "I". We can recognize these two words in the morning message! In the dramatic play center, we have created a Halloween shop. We have costumes, and decorations up and all the friends are enjoying taking turns at this center. We also read many great stories this week including Curious George Flies a Kite, which got all of us curious to build our own kites.  We uses supplies such as string, paper, popsicle sticks, glue, scissors and tape to create our very own kites at the Art Center.  We also learned a lot about apples this week.  We continued to enjoy singing our apple song (the video is posted in the video tab), and we even had an apple taste testing center.  All our friends had the chance to taste apples and graph which one was their favourite.  Take a look at the picture to see the results of our graph.
